Secondary education

For secondary education, the Kunsthal offers several types of guided tours: ArtHopping, Exhibition Tour and Architecture Tour. During the tour, the guide engages students in conversation about the artworks, asks viewing questions and gets them involved in short assignments. Choose your preferred tour below and request your visit.

ArtHopping

Available year-round

During ArtHopping, the guide takes students on a fast-paced journey past a variety of artworks and objects, criss-crossing through the Kunsthal. Along the way, they visit different exhibitions and see the extraordinary building from a new perspective. In just one hour, they are introduced to a wide range of artworks and stories and are surprised by what they encounter along the way.

Guided tour Helen Levitt. City at Play

Available to book until 4 October 2026

Discover a major retrospective of the work of Helen Levitt (1913–2009), one of the most important street photographers of the twentieth century, at the Kunsthal. Featuring over 220 photographs, a film and colour slides, City at Play spans more than fifty years of her work.

Throughout her career, Levitt photographed life on the streets of New York: children playing in the spray of a fire hydrant, women whispering to each other in a doorway, a couple in love on the subway. Her photographs are never posed or sensational, but instead reveal a subtle sense of humour, tenderness and an eye for the everyday.

Guided tour Signac. Symphony of Colours

Available to book from 27 October 2026 to 28 February 2027

Discover an impressive overview of the work of Paul Signac (1863–1935), a master of Neo-Impressionism, at the Kunsthal. Building on the work of Georges Seurat, he developed Pointillism at the end of the nineteenth century: a painting technique in which dots and short brushstrokes come together to create a symphony of colour.

Explore colourful landscapes, portraits and lively harbour scenes. The Netherlands was also a source of inspiration for Signac: the exhibition includes his painting of the port of Rotterdam as well as a work depicting the windmill in Edam.

Architecture Tour

Available year-round

Kunsthal Rotterdam is an icon of modern architecture and attracts architecture enthusiasts from all over the world every year. The Kunsthal was designed in 1988–1989 by architect Rem Koolhaas, together with project architect Fuminori Hoshino of the Rotterdam-based architecture firm OMA (Office for Metropolitan Architecture). Its architecture immediately attracted widespread international attention, in part because of its use of materials, the positioning of the entrance and the steep ramp.

During the tour, students discover the architecture of the extraordinary Kunsthal building.

General information

Request a school visit at least three weeks in advance. You will hear from us within ten working days whether we can accommodate the class(es) on the requested date.

• All guided tours last approximately 60 minutes.

• At least 1 supervisor is required for every group of 15 students.

• Cost: €75 per group (max. 15 students per tour).

• Students up to and including the age of 18 visit the Kunsthal free of charge (upon presentation of ID). Students aged 19 and over receive a student discount.

• Free admission for teachers and supervisors during educational visits.

• Please read the visitor guidelines carefully and discuss them with the class.
