Is it possible to recreate the complexity of nature with the help of digital techniques? For decades, this question has been central to the work of Eelco Brand (Rotterdam, 1969). Initially starting his career as a painter, his artistic practice shifted to digital media in 2003. This medium allows him to add movement to his work, modelling ‘virtual clay’ like a sculptor to create a depiction.

Bringing to life simulations of plants and growth processes, his video works are characterised by flowing movements, slowly repeating themselves in an endless, mesmerising rhythm. By means of computer animation and 3D-modeling he manages to create extremely detailed yet surrealistic natural scenes filled with budding flowers, or landscapes with rolling hills. Using digital material, Brand thus tries to suggest a credible, natural reality. In HALL 6, the Kunsthal’s display window, eight of his works will be on view up to and including 10 November 2024.
